The Paradox of Unity: Why We're All One Yet Choose Different Paths
A reflection from the Dominican Republic on the beautiful mystery of uniqueness within unity.
Hi everyone,
For those in the U.S., I hope you had a joyful 4th of July weekend!
I've just returned from a soul-refreshing trip to my home country, the Dominican Republic.
In the quiet moments there, I found myself reflecting on something that's both simple and deeply mysterious: If we are all made of the same energy—if we are all, in some sense, "I am"—why do our lives unfold so differently? Why do we each have unique themes, inclinations, and dreams?
Let's take a gentle walk through this question together.
The Dance of Uniqueness
Picture a crowded plaza in Santo Domingo at sunset. There's music in the air—merengue, laughter, the clink of coffee cups. I watched as people moved through the scene: the dancer spinning with effortless grace, the quiet artist sketching in a corner, the comedian drawing a circle of smiles, the singer whose voice seemed to gather the dusk itself.
Each person radiated something utterly unique, like a note in a symphony. Yet science tells us that at the most fundamental level, we are all made of the same stardust—carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, the ancient atoms forged in the hearts of stars. The mystics say, "We are all one." Physics says, "Everything is energy."
So why do we feel so different?
The Prism and the Light
Here's a metaphor that came to me, inspired by both science and spirit:
Imagine pure white light—unified, whole, containing all possibilities within itself. This light represents the One, the universal energy, the "I am" that mystics speak of. When this light encounters a crystal prism, it doesn't become different lights. Instead, it reveals what was always there: the infinite spectrum of its own nature.
You are not separate from this light. You are this light, expressed as a specific frequency on the spectrum of existence. Maybe you're a deep, soulful blue. Within that blue exists infinite variations: the gentle sky blue of peace, the electric blue of innovation, the deep navy of contemplation. Each shade represents a different state of being you can access, but your core frequency—your soul's essence—remains the same.
This is why the ancient Vedic texts speak of Tat tvam asi—"Thou art That." You are the totality expressing itself as particularity.
Science: The Signature of You
Modern science echoes this mystical understanding. The Human Genome Project revealed that humans share 99.9% of the same DNA. Yet that tiny fraction that differs gives rise to our individuality: our fingerprints, our voices, even our quirks. Epigenetics shows that our environment and choices can "turn on" or "turn off" certain genes, shaping who we become.
Quantum physics tells us that at the deepest level, particles are just vibrations—frequencies of energy. The difference between a violin's A note and a piano's A note is not the note itself, but the way it's played, the resonance, the overtones. In the same way, your "note" in the universe is utterly unique.
The Masters of Our Limitations
Ancient stories have always tried to explain our differences. In Greek myth, the Fates spun, measured, and cut the threads of each person's life. In Hindu philosophy, the soul (Atman) chooses a unique path (Dharma) in each lifetime—a theme, a lesson, a flavor of experience.
The Cherokee teach Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ: "We are all related." Not identical, but related. Like instruments in an orchestra, each playing its part in a symphony that would be incomplete without every voice.
Modern spiritual teachers like Bashar call us "masters of our limitations." We are given the clay of infinite possibility, and through the power of choice, we shape our lives. Earth, with all its beauty and chaos, is the stage where free will is the main act.
But here's the crucial question: What determines our choices?
Where Choice Is Born
If we are all One, why do we choose different things? Why do some of us long to dance, while others crave silence? Why do we fall in love with different people, different places, different dreams?
The answer may lie in your soul's blueprint: your prism color.
Imagine consciousness decided to know itself completely. To do this, it would need to experience every possible perspective, every conceivable way of being. So it fragments itself into infinite unique frequencies, with each one a different "color" designed to explore specific territories of existence.
Your prism color is your soul's fundamental frequency, your core signature. But more than just an identity marker, it's your soul's intention: the specific way consciousness has chosen to explore and express itself through you.
It's not just what you are but what you came here to do, to experience, to contribute to the cosmic understanding.
Think of it as your soul's mission statement written in frequency. If you're "blue," your soul's intention might be to explore truth, depth, and authentic communication. If you're "red," perhaps your intention is to understand passion, leadership, and the power of action.
Your blueprint isn't random. It's purposeful, intentional, a deliberate choice made at the deepest level of your being.
From this unique color arises a unique curiosity.
Just as blue might be drawn to the sea and green to the forest, your individual essence shapes the specific questions you ask, the passions you pursue, and the mysteries that call to you. Your choices emerge from this deeper blueprint. It's not your personality making decisions; it's your soul's frequency recognizing what it came here to explore and express.
Two Types of Frequency: Soul Blueprint vs. Emotional State
Here's where it may be helpful to distinguish between two different types of frequency that operate in your life:
Your Soul Frequency is your unchanging core blueprint—your prism color. This is what you are at the deepest level. If you're blue, you're blue whether you're having the best day of your life or the worst. This frequency determines what you're naturally curious about, what themes keep appearing in your life, and what feels like your authentic path.
Your Emotional Frequency is your current state of being—what Dr. David Hawkins mapped in his famous scale of consciousness. These frequencies range from shame (20) to enlightenment (700-1000) and represent your temporary emotional and mental state. You can shift from fear (100) to love (500) through inner work, healing, and conscious choice.
Think of it like this: Your soul frequency is your instrument—whether you're a violin, piano, or flute. Your emotional frequency is how clearly that instrument is being played. A violin can play beautiful music or create discordant sounds, but it's always a violin.
When you're operating at lower emotional frequencies (fear, anger, shame), your soul color appears dim and distorted. When you're at higher emotional frequencies (love, joy, peace), your soul color shines brilliantly and clearly. But the color itself—your core mission and curiosity—remains constant.
This is why two people with the same soul frequency (say, both "blue") might express completely differently based on their emotional state. One might be a fearful, withdrawn blue, while another is a radiant, confident blue sharing their truth with the world.
The Three Levels of Resonance
Through observation and contemplation, I've noticed we connect with others on three distinct levels:
1. Trauma Resonance: We bond through shared wounds, meeting at the level of our protective mechanisms and survival strategies. This creates powerful but often temporary connections.
2. Awareness Resonance: We connect through similar levels of consciousness. The growth-oriented meet growth-oriented, the curious meet curious. These relationships support expansion and understanding.
3. Soul Theme Resonance: The deepest level, where we recognize those who share our fundamental frequency, our core mission in existence. These are the people who feel like home, who understand your language without translation.
The Story of the Blue Soul
Let's return to the prism. Imagine you are blue, a deep, vibrant blue. This is your soul frequency, your unchanging essence.
Now, you can express that blue through different emotional frequencies: When you're in a state of love and joy (high emotional frequency), your blue becomes luminous, perhaps the clear blue of a mountain lake or the electric blue of lightning. When you're in fear or anger (lower emotional frequency), your blue appears muddy, like stormy waters or faded denim.
You might blend with other soul colors when you're with certain people (green for healing, violet for wisdom), but your core blue resonance remains. The inner work you do—meditation, therapy, spiritual practice—doesn't change your soul color. Instead, it clears the static so your authentic blue can shine through more clearly.
This is why forcing yourself to be someone else feels so depleting. You're not just trying to operate at a different emotional frequency (which is possible and healthy), you're trying to be a completely different soul color altogether. It's like a violin trying to become a trumpet: energetically exhausting and never quite authentic.
But when you align with your soul color and operate from higher emotional frequencies, everything flows. You're not swimming against the current—you're riding the wave of your authentic nature while expressing it as clearly as possible.
The Gift of Difference
So what if the universe delights in its own diversity, like a master painter mixing infinite shades from a single palette?
Your unique inclinations aren't a departure from unity; they're unity's way of exploring itself through your particular lens. Your prism color creates the magnetic pull toward certain experiences, people, and expressions. When you follow your authentic curiosity, when you express your true nature, you're not separate from the whole. You're the whole, discovering what it's like to be you.
Each of us is a window through which the universe looks at itself from a new angle. Our unique curiosity, born from our unique color, is what pulls us in different directions. That's why, even though we are all expressions of the same One, we are each compelled by different dreams.
The dancer teaches the universe about grace. The artist shows it new ways to see. The quiet contemplative reveals the power of stillness. The comedian demonstrates that joy can transform pain. Each path is sacred because each path is consciousness exploring a different facet of its infinite nature.
An Invitation
The next time you wonder why you're drawn to certain experiences, certain people, certain ways of being, ponder if it is your soul color calling you home. These may not be random preferences but your deepest blueprint recognizing its resonant frequency.
What is your color? What themes keep showing up in your life? What choices feel most alive for you? I invite you to sit with these questions—not to find the "right" answer, but to enjoy the exploration.
Your inclinations are your soul's way of showing you what you came here to explore. Your path is not a deviation from unity but unity's way of knowing itself more completely through your unique frequency.
The question isn't "Why am I different?" but "What is my color trying to teach the universe about itself?"
After all, the beauty of the rainbow is not in its sameness, but in its spectrum.
In the end, we're all the same light, but each carrying a different color assignment in the cosmic mission of consciousness knowing itself completely.
With curiosity and gratitude,
Valeria
